This week’s walk is a longer outing of around six miles, starting from the Wern claypits at Ardleen. From here we join the Montgomery Canal, following its quiet towpath through open countryside. The route then takes us along a green lane, or if conditions are wet, a nearby country lane, before linking up with the Guilsfield Arm of the Montgomery Canal, now a peaceful nature reserve.
As we make our way back towards Ardleen, there are lovely views across the surrounding fields, with plenty of wildlife to spot along the canal and in the hedgerows. We then return along the Montgomery Canal to Wern, completing a varied and enjoyable circular walk.
This is a steady walk with mainly level ground, ideal for those who enjoy a longer stretch, quiet waterways, and good company in the open countryside.
Take the Welshpool road out of Oswestry and follow it to the just passed the turning to Ardleen
Montgomery Canal – Wern Claypit Nature Reserve Welshpool, SY21 9LH Parking is nearby at the claypit area.
