Fran Sandham set out to do something few had ever achieved – to walk alone across the entire continent of Africa.
What began as an ambitious idea grew into an extraordinary personal journey. With no support team, no sponsors, and no safety net, Fran walked every step of the way, from the Atlantic coast in Namibia to the Indian Ocean in Tanzania. He carried all his own gear, made all his own arrangements, and faced the vast unknown entirely on his own terms.
His motivation? A desire to do something truly challenging and to experience the continent without filters or fanfare – just one man, his rucksack, and the road ahead. In this gripping and often humorous talk, Fran shares stories from his journey: the landscapes, the people, the hardships and the moments of joy. It’s an inspiring reminder of human endurance and the power of quiet determination.
Come and hear about one of the last great solo adventures – and the man who chose to walk it alone.
This is part of the ongoing programme at Oswestry u3a, where members enjoy learning, sharing interests, and meeting like-minded people.
