The walk from the Rodney's Pillar car park (Breidden Forest, SY5 9AZ) to the summit is one of the most enjoyable short hill walks on the Shropshire–Powys border. It is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.
Distance: About 2.5–3 miles (4–5 km) return
Time: 1½–2 hours, allowing time to enjoy the views
Ascent: Around 180 metres (600 feet)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate, with a steeper climb near the top.
From the car park, we follow the wide forest track as it climbs steadily through mixed woodland, the path is well marked and easy to follow. After about 20 minutes, we leave the main track and follow the signposted footpath towards Rodney's Pillar.
The final section becomes steeper as we leave the trees and climb onto open hillside. This short climb is the most demanding part of the walk, but the reward is worth the effort. At the summit we take our "banana" break where Rodney's Pillar stands on Breidden Hill, 366 metres (1,201 feet) above sea level. On a clear day there are sweeping views across the Severn Valley, Welshpool, the Long Mynd, the Berwyn Mountains, and as far as the mountains of Snowdonia. The return follows the same route back to the car park, making this a straightforward and rewarding outing at any time of year. Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after wet weather, as the final climb can become slippery. Mike has agreed to lead this walk.
At present, the monument itself is fenced off while conservation work is planned, but visitors can still enjoy the summit and the panoramic views from the surrounding area.
We are also looking to run an easier walk on the same day starting part way up the hill, but this depends an additional walk leader.
