Our 4 mile walk starts at Queens Head, where we set off along the canal, passing Aston Locks before turning through a gate and heading uphill towards a quiet country lane. We then turn right and walk towards the Queens Head to Wolfden Road, enjoying lovely views across the surrounding hills. At the junction, we turn right again and continue along the road towards Wolfden, taking in the open countryside and wide views as we go.
From Wolfden, the route continues downhill towards St Wilfrid’s Well, an interesting 13th-century local feature. The well is now part of a self-catering property and provides a chance to pause and take in a little of the area’s history.
The walk then crosses a field, which can be muddy after wet weather, before bringing us back to the canal. We turn left and follow the canal towpath back towards Queens Head, completing an enjoyable circular walk.
The route offers a good mix of canal walking, country lanes, fields, hills and fine views, with St Wilfrid’s Well providing an interesting historical highlight along the way. It is another good opportunity to enjoy the countryside while walking and chatting with fellow members.
