Our next Oswestry u3a walk will be led by Edmund, taking us on a steady Moderate 4-mile route towards Hengoed and then on around the top of the Hill Fort. The paths are nearly all dry field tracks with no major climbs, making for a pleasant outing at a moderate pace. Along the way there are about ten stiles to cross, and we will pass through a couple of fields with cattle, so this walk may not appeal to everyone. Those who join will enjoy fine views and good company, with Edmund keeping the group together and setting a steady pace.
Old Oswestry Hill Fort which is one of Britain’s best-preserved Iron Age hill forts. Built over 2,500 years ago, it features a series of impressive earthwork ramparts, offering clear views across Shropshire and into Wales. The fort would have been a stronghold and settlement for ancient tribes, providing both defence and community. Its complex layout suggests it was of regional importance. Today, it remains a striking landmark and a reminder of Oswestry’s ancient roots. Members can enjoy a peaceful walk around the site while imagining the lives of those who once called it home.
Note: We will start from Gatacre Car Park, not Morrisons
